Antique signed portrait miniature depicting Madame Sophie de France (1734–1782), daughter of King Louis XV of France, after the celebrated Rococo portraiture of Jean-Marc Nattier. The exact date of the painting is not confirmed.
Size framed: 4.5 x 5.5” inches
Signed at center right with a clearly visible cursive artist’s signature. The artist has not been conclusively identified; please see detailed photograph.
The finely detailed oval portrait depicts Madame Sophie in an elaborate blue and ivory gown adorned with flowers. The miniature is signed at center right; the signature is visible but has not been conclusively identified.
The portrait is housed beneath convex glass in an ornate gilt/brass-tone floral bezel and an impressive segmented ivory-tone frame with a tortoiseshell-colored outer border. The frame retains its original-style metal hanging ring.
The reverse is particularly interesting and retains an old French printed-paper backing taken from Souvenirs sur l’Impératrice Eugénie. “Madam Sophie” is handwritten along the upper edge, further identifying the subject.
Painting appears to be executed in watercolor/gouache or bodycolor. Exact support material has not been professionally tested.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related surface wear to the convex glass and minor separation/irregularities to some frame segments. The reverse paper backing shows considerable age toning and wear. Please review photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A beautiful collectible example of French royal portraiture and European portrait-miniature art.
