Charming early 20th-century Bavarian painted glass folk-art picture produced by U. Riemer-Zöllner of Dachau, Germany.

The traditional Bavarian scene depicts a man wearing lederhosen and an Alpine feathered hat, holding a large beer stein in one hand and a decorated staff in the other. The image is housed in its original-looking simple wooden frame.

Most importantly, the original paper workshop label remains attached to the reverse and reads:

“Erzeugnis der Oberbayerischen Glasbildkunst

U. Riemer-Zöllner

Dachau, Am Heideweg 16

Entwurf: Kunstmaler [handwritten printed signature]

Genehmigter Verkaufspreis: RM 40.-”

The label identifies the piece as a product of Upper Bavarian glass-picture art from Dachau and records its original approved selling price as 40 Reichsmarks. Because the Reichsmark was used in Germany from 1924 until 1948, the label provides an unusually useful period reference for the piece.

The artwork has wonderful Bavarian folk character, with traditional lederhosen, beer stein, Alpine hat and colorful decorative details. Particularly appealing for collectors of German folk art, Bavarian decor, Dachau art, reverse-painted glass and vintage beer/Bier memorabilia.

Condition: Displays age-related wear consistent with its age. There is visible paint loss/flaking throughout portions of the figure, particularly the shirt, socks, hat and beer stein, along with discoloration/toning to the background. Wooden frame shows surface wear and finish loss. Original paper backing is brittle, torn and deteriorated in areas, but importantly the original U. Riemer-Zöllner workshop label remains largely legible. Please review all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
