Original 1902 Civil War regimental history – History 31st Regiment Illinois Volunteers, Organized by John A. Logan.
Published by Keller Printing & Publishing Co., Evansville, Indiana, in 1902. This is the original 1902 publication, not the later reprint.
Written/compiled by veterans W. S. Morris, J. B. Kuykendall and L. D. Hartwell, the volume documents the history and military service of the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry, the Union regiment organized by John A. Logan during the American Civil War. The regiment was mustered into service in September 1861 and participated in major campaigns and battles including Belmont, Fort Donelson, Vicksburg and the Atlanta Campaign.
Features an illustrated cloth hardcover with Civil War camp/tent design, portrait frontispiece of Brigadier General John A. Logan, and period illustrations/portraits throughout.
The book was produced for the surviving members of the 31st Regiment and their descendants. The introductory text explains that the history grew out of the regiment’s 1898 annual reunion, when a committee was selected to compile a connected narrative of the unit’s military operations.
Condition: Antique pre-owned condition with age-related wear. Blue/green cloth boards show rubbing, fading, spotting/staining, edge and corner wear, and wear to the spine. Pages show expected age toning- but still in good condition considering the age. The front inner hinge/endpaper is cracked/separated as pictured, although the book remains together. Please review all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A scarce piece of original Illinois and American Civil War history, particularly appealing to collectors of Union regimental histories, Illinois military history, John A. Logan material, genealogy and Civil War ephemera.
