Louvre Chalcographie – “Susanne au Bain” – Carlo Antonio Porporati after Jean-Baptiste Santerre
Large French intaglio engraving print of Susanne au Bain (Susannah at the Bath), engraved by Carlo Antonio Porporati after the painting by Jean-Baptiste Santerre.
Porporati created the original engraving in 1773 as his reception piece for the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. The composition depicts Susannah bathing while the two elders secretly observe her from the background.
This example is a later impression from the historic plate and bears the embossed MUSÉE DU LOUVRE – CHALCOGRAPHIE blind stamp beneath the image. The original engraved inscriptions remain visible, including “Susanne au Bain,” Santerre’s name at lower left and Porporati’s at lower right.
Printed on a large sheet of heavy textured laid/wove art paper with deckled edges. Sheet measures approximately 22 inches wide × 30 inches high based on the photographs. Unframed.
The print itself presents well with strong detail. The sheet shows age/storage wear. Please examine all photographs closely for condition.
Later Chalcographie du Louvre impression from Carlo Antonio Porporati’s original 1773 engraved plate. Exact printing date unknown, likely 20th century.
